Rail Trail Phase Two
Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway
Nestled in the heart of the Central Tablelands, the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway (OTHR) invites visitors to step back in time and explore a cherished part of Australia’s railway history. Located in the Oberon Station Heritage Precinct on North Street, this volunteer-run site offers a glimpse into a bygone era of rail travel and industry.
Visitors can enjoy guided personal or group tours upon request from Monday to Saturday. The precinct features a 6-kilometer rail trail that follows the historic railway line from Oberon to the original Hazelgrove passenger stop and freight loop, making it a perfect outing for history buffs and nature enthusiasts alike.
At the heart of the precinct is the meticulously restored 1923 Station Building, which houses an engaging display of railway memorabilia and historical artifacts. The rolling stock shed showcases an impressive collection of vintage railway vehicles, including two beautifully restored End Platform Cars from 1897, a composite branchline sleeping car dating back to 1891, and two 73 Class Locomotives. Additionally, visitors can admire the grandeur of Steam Locomotive 3085 and examine early railway section cars used by track maintenance workers.
For those interested in a more immersive experience, OTHR offers catering options such as Devonshire teas, light lunches, and high teas, all served in the heritage carriages at the station. These charming dining experiences must be booked in advance to ensure a memorable visit.
Entry to the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway is just $5 per person, with additional costs for catering services. Whether you’re a railway enthusiast, a history lover, or simply seeking a unique day out, OTHR provides a fascinating window into Australia’s rich rail heritage.
