About the Blue Mountains Rail Trail

The Blue Mountains Rail Trail is an exciting heritage journey that connects 13 historic railway and industrial sites across the Greater Blue Mountains, stretching from Lapstone to Oberon via Lithgow and Clarence. Created with the assistance of the Blue Mountains Historical Society, this unique experience allows visitors to explore over 150 years of rail and industrial heritage while immersing themselves in the breathtaking landscapes of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

Whether by foot, bicycle, or train, visitors can follow the path of historic rail beds, travel through tunnels, explore construction tramways, and visit railway museums and heritage sites. This trail is a must-do for railway enthusiasts, history lovers, and adventure seekers looking to discover the stories of our region’s railway past.

A Collaboration of History and Innovation

The Blue Mountains Rail Trail has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of local councils, historical societies, and dedicated community members. The trail is featured in a locally designed brochure and website, with design costs covered by Blue Mountains City Council and printing funded by Lithgow Council. The website was developed by local designer Brad Diedrich with support from Ask Roz Blue Mountains, ensuring visitors have access to a modern and user-friendly platform to plan their adventure.

What the Blue Mountains Rail Trail Offers

  • 13 historic sites, mapped geographically from Lapstone to Oberon via Clarence and Lithgow

  • A variety of experiences including bushwalks, cycling routes, train rides, and museum visits

  • A planning guide to help visitors schedule their trip, as some sites are open only on select days

  • A website with an interactive map and detailed information about each location

  • Activities for all ages, from miniature train rides to overnight hikes

  • Alternative experiences if certain sites are closed—such as walking or cycling along the Lapstone Zig-Zag and tramway to Bluff Lookout while the Lapstone Tunnel remains inaccessible

  • QR code integration on brochures for easy mobile access to site details

The Rail Trail is designed to encourage visitors to spend more time in the region, helping them discover multiple locations that they might otherwise overlook. Whether you’re here for a day trip or a full weekend of exploration, the Rail Trail ensures a fun and immersive historical adventure.

Future Expansion

The Blaxland Phase is a key extension of the Blue Mountains Rail Trail, incorporating the Wascoe Siding Miniature Railway and additional heritage features. As the Rail Trail continues to develop, future expansions will include new historical sites, enhanced signage, rest areas, and more guided experiences. The long-term goal is to establish a fully connected, multi-use pathway that not only preserves railway heritage but also promotes eco-tourism and active outdoor recreation.
