ON THE BLUE MOUNTAINS RAIL TRAIL YOU CAN:

  1. Walk or cycle the old rail tracks (at Lapstone, Glenbrook,

  2. Clarence, and Oberon) Ride steam trains at Valley Heights,

  3. Clarence, and (soon) Oberon Visit rail museums (at Valley

  4. Heights, Mt Victoria and Oberon) Explore old rail tunnels and see glow worms (at Lapstone and Clarence) Visit Industrial Museums (in Lithgow)

Places to visit on your 

Railway Excursion

1. Lapstone/Glenbrook: The Blue Mountains Rail Trail starts in Lapstone

2. Blaxland: Wascoe Siding miniature railway runs on the first Sunday of the month

3. Valley Heights: Locomotive Depot and Museum. Open second and fourth Sunday of every month

4. Woodford: Woodford Academy was originally an inn where people would go by train.

5. Wentworth Falls: enjoy a picnic at Wentworth Falls Lake or take an easy walk around the dam.

6. Katoomba: Take a ride on the Scenic Railway, the world’s steepest train.

7. Mount Victoria: The Mount Victoria Museum, located on the historic station.

8. Clarence: The Zig-Zag Railway. Take a ride on the train or walk down to the bottom (currently closed).

9. Clarence: The Wolgan Rail Trail. Drive or cycle along the old rail bed the a tunnel to the Glow Worm Tunnel walking tracks.

10. Lithgow: The Slate Mine Heritage Museum, explore original mining equipment, restored locomotives, and historic buildings.

11. Lithgow: The Small Arms Factory Museum. Currently closed.

12. Lithgow: Blast Furnace Park. It was here that the first iron and the first steel in Australia were cast.

13. Oberon: Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway. Step back in time and explore a cherished part of Australia’s railway history.

Chris Webber on the 13th March announced that, with the assistance of the Blue Mountains Historical Society, a Blue Mountains Rail Trail has now been created, combining 13 different sites throughout the Greater Blue Mountains, from Lapstone to Oberon via Lithgow.
